Must-Have:
- Knowledge of surgical procedures, anatomy and physiology, and operative techniques related to specific procedures
- Ability to assist the surgeon in providing exposure, hemostasis, closure, and other intraoperative technical functions
- Capability to apply proper draping, retracting, suctioning, sponging, suturing, and cautery techniques
Description:
This position prepares the surgical suite for procedures by assisting the surgical technologist and registered nurse in gathering equipment, instruments, and supplies.
The position ensures all supplies and equipment are available for procedures and in working condition.
The assistant aids the surgeon in the care of the patient while in the operating room through teamwork.
Responsibilities include providing proper draping, retracting, suctioning, sponging, tissue handling, and suturing techniques.
Additionally, the assistant applies appropriate dressing materials specific to each procedure.
An essential part of the role is to ensure all necessary supplies and equipment are opened or available.
Collaboration with the nurse and surgical technologist to confirm items are charged appropriately is required.
The assistant also provides support with proper positioning, draping, retracting, suctioning, tissue handling, and suturing as directed by the physician.
There may be responsibilities related to transportation and positioning of patients as needed.
