Description: The position involves providing care in a busy emergency room setting. The average number of patients treated in the emergency room is between 70-80 daily. The nurse-to-patient ratio is 4:1. Common diagnoses include chest pain, abdominal pain, shortness of breath, and uncontrolled diabetes. Patients range in age from 20 to 90 years old. The facility holds a designation for STEMI and stroke receiving. There are 24 beds including behavioral health and critical care rooms. A fast track area is available with 9 chairs for vertical flow. Separate triage and holding areas are present, with requirements for travelers to participate in triage. Security is available in-house 24/7. A charge nurse is on each shift and may take patient assignments. Nurse aides are part of the team, providing support in transport and patient care. Respiratory therapy is available 24/7, offering multiple services. RNs are responsible for drawing labs and must troubleshoot respiratory equipment. There are no tele/monitor techs, requiring RNs to read their own strips. Staffing includes one physician with additional mid-level support during peak hours. Floating to other campuses may be required, but will be infrequent. Self-scheduling is allowed for local staff, but not guaranteed for travelers. Weekend and holiday coverage is expected unless negotiated otherwise. Navy blue scrubs are the required attire, with certain branding allowed. This position is not suitable for new emergency department nurses, as a high level of independence is expected. The ability to care for a high acuity patient population is critical, along with efficient patient transfer when necessary.
