Description:
The Licensed Practical Nurse is responsible for performing basic nursing duties.
This includes executing physician orders and assisting the physician in examinations and treatments.
Operates pill call and sick call, dispensing medication as required by applicable policies and procedures.
Assists in the professional management of the facility medical department.
Applies appropriate nursing skills in the care and treatment of inmates/residents.
Attends sick call with the physician to see inmates/residents.
Prepares a list of inmates/residents to be examined.
Prepares examining room and equipment.
Controls medication, syringes, and other medical supplies or equipment.
Performs emergency procedures as needed.
Documents and reports activities in accordance with established policies and procedures.
Maintains absolute security and confidentiality of all medical records.
Observes and records inmate/resident behavior.
Inspects the medical unit for contraband items.
Assists in preparing and maintaining a variety of standard narrative, statistical, and operational records.
Reads, comprehends, and interprets medical and technical procedures.
Communicates effectively to administration, staff, inmates/residents, and visitors.
Evaluates and recommends physical safety requirements to ensure a safe working environment.
Facilitates the accreditation of the medical program by providing approved medical services.
Prepares and disseminates safety and accident reports as required.
Escorts inmates/residents as needed for medical treatment.
Engages in functions in confined areas, working rotating shifts.
Exercises independent judgment in investigations and inquiries, determining the need for disciplinary action.
Is aware that verbal abuse may occur in a challenging environment.
