Description: The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) is responsible for providing care for patients with defined health challenges and predictable outcomes. The LPN collaborates with patients and the health care team within their scope of practice. As the acuity or complexity of patient needs increases, the LPN, under the supervision of the Registered Nurse (RN), provides nursing interventions within their scope of practice. The RN retains accountability for the assignment and/or delegation of patient care activities to the LPN. The LPN is accountable for their individual actions or practices. The LPN complies with documentation processes as required. IV initiation and IV medication administration are recognized as entry-level competencies in the LPN curriculum. Currently, these skills may not be performed in all practice areas. External staff possessing these competencies must check with the Charge Nurse on each unit to determine approval for practice in that area and to know which medications are permitted for administration by LPNs.
